ACricket of a Girl is a historical fiction/coming-of agenovel. Set in the tiny, war-stricken Latin American country of El Salvador, inthe 1950s and 1960s, it is the story of the unlikely friendship of two women, one American and one Salvadorian, who become friends in spite, or perhapsbecause of the poverty, sexual abuse and death they have been forced toconfront. A Cricket of a Girl is a heartwarmingand optimistic tale that will stay with you long after you put down the book.

So this is a historical fiction story of two cultures, two women with two different challenges that are linked in life without any knowledge of it until one day they meet. This means one must travel far from her home and enter the other's culture which is very alien to her. Events lead them to meet and finally the kindred spirit between them is realized.

I think the book is beautifully written and captures the two personalities well (Laura and Sesi) along with the El Salvadorean culture in the 1950s-60s when the goverment changed from the dictator José María Lemus to the government of the people (junta de gobierno) but this is near the end of the book though the pressure of it is felt by Sesi as the book progresses. The story unfolds in a slow fashion as this book is about characters and not events. We see all the events through the characters. The events are important but they are in the periphery.

The characters are real, with real problems that lead them together. It is a story of two becoming stronger than one. Great read!

I highly recomend this book to all readers, specially those who are interested in knowing the Latin American structure of the poors & not well educated people due to a primitive implanted system which will change sooner or later
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book! Although it is not a true story, the author painted the picture through her writing with details about ES and the contentions and wars that were going on there. It was so exciting to read and be able to picture in my mind each place that was mentioned. A very good read, and I would recommend it to anyone.
This is a wonderful book, full of heart. I love the story-telling within the story. The imagery is described beautifully, making it easy to picture the people and their surroundings. Sesi’s thought processes are imaginative and intriguing. And the theme of different cultures coming together resonates in today’s world. I highly recommend this book.
This is my favorite book by Christy Esmahan! It tells the intertwined stories of a Salvadoran maid and her American employer in El Salvador during the Civil War. As a Salvadoran, the descriptions of the food, people, and culture of El Salvador along with the heartbreaking stories about the Civil War really resonated with me. I recommend this book for anyone interested in strong female protagonists, the power of love and friendship to transcend cultural barriers, or the history and culture of El Salvador.
I really enjoyed this book. The author's portrayal of the characters is so real and genuine. I was so taken with Sesi and what a strong young woman she was in spite of the terribly difficult life she had. Same with Laura...another woman who had such a terrible childhood with horrible abuse at the hand of her parents. Yet both of these women had such strength of character and genuine goodness at their core. I loved reading about them and the friendship that grew between them. Ms. Esmahan did a great job with this story......I really grew to love these characters. Very enjoyable read.
Very strong opening to this book with Sisi, the first-person narrator as a young teenage nanny interacting with her charge reminds me of other strong characters growing up in challenging circumstances, such as Huckleberry Finn. This voice is so delightful, I missed it when the narration switches to a more distanced third-person to introduce a new character, Laura. The best parts of Laura's story happen when the narrator closes the distance and shows Laura's thinking as she works out a solution to a threat. In what happens to these 2 young girls, the author develops themes important and valuable to this contemporary world. This is a coming-of-age story of ultimate triumph in a troubled and threatening world.
This was probably my favorite of Christy Esmahan's books that I have read. I fell in love with the story from the first page and could not wait to hear about the Monkey Princess and how the story would unfold. This was a fantastic book and I lost myself several times in the fantasy. The story took me on a magical journey where I got to experience the true feelings and raw emotion of the person in the story. I could feel the pain, the love, the heartache, the joy, and the pride as the story unfolded. The characters were so well drawn that I didn't need voluminous descriptions of the changes as they aged but was able to remember myself at each stage and place myself in the story. The story became mine and I was the participant and all the events were mine. This is the mark of a true story teller. The magical way that we can get lost in the story and imagine ourselves doing each thing that is written.
Although I didn't grow up in El Salvador, I know what it was like to be poor and to have to go out and work at a very young age to help support the family. I could relate to the characters and all the trials and tribulations that they endured.
I would recommend this book to everyone I know and will say that I enjoyed reading and learning about the country, the land, and the people. This book was so easy to read and it was full of wonderful imagery and surprising amounts of factual information.
I hope that more people read this and find it as entertaining as I did. I loved it and can't wait to hear more stories from this very talented writer.
